Webbing-Pattern 61/64 webbing

Post by richardtl »

The internal collective SADF naming seen in some docs is P63 for the P61 and P64 webbing.

To start off a Pattern 64 Groot sak, as seen on the right hand side in this pic

A mixed set of P61 and P64 items for contrast in colour. To summarise the main differences are:
P61
Brown/Khaki coloured webbing-sometimes a combo of colours.
Pre 64 date stamps, generally showing SADF U/M
Brass fittings with a blackened finish.
Twists side clasps on front pouches on early webbing
Open bottle holders with bottle exposed
The ground sheet holder generally has straps with clasp to attach to front pouches.
P64
Green coloured webbing
Post 64 stampings generally showing SADF U/M
Metal plastic coated green fittings
No twists on sides of front pouches
Bottle holders are proper full pouches with only lid exposed.
The ground sheet holder generally has straps with NO clasps to attach to front pouches. These straps are then folded into pouch buckles.

P61 webbing. Showing pick. The pick head goes into the poncho/ground cover. The handle has a hole in it. This goes into either the pin attachment fitted to the yoke or back of the groot sak (large pack).

Note also green, shiny poncho a copy of the similar brit item.

The Brit P58 from which this webbing was copied. There are some distinct differences. The colour of the P58 is an olive green. Most of the fittings are green anodized aluminium. Very late webbing had a green plastic on the fittings similar to the SADf P64. Normally stampings will show the Brit BROAD ARROW stamp. The belt has only one set of D clips at the back unlike the SADF webbing belt which has two sets sewn directly to the belt. On the brit webbing the second set are via attached clasps. The Brit P58 had forward slanted front pouches. the Brit webbing made use of a smaller pouch to hold the water bottle.

P61 64 compass pouch, which is lined along with pistol ammo pouch (unlined)

Image

P61 64 pistol holster. Early pouches were made for revolvers and you had a slanted flap, you can see on modified ones where the revolver holster latch has been removed and restitched to make flap top parallel. I have sample I must post of an original revolver holster. Also you can see where the mag pouch was added to early holsters and uses different material.

P64 webbing pics showing how Pick and Shovel fit to the groundsheet/poncho holder. These have the green ponchos in them which were a copy of the Brit P58 item.
