R1 and R4 sling

Postby richardtl » Mon Jul 15, 2019 6:03 pm

R1 vs R4 sling. The original R1 slings were similar to the FN FAL one and much like the sling fitted to the older Lee Enfield rifles. A sling was brought out with wider tabs to fit the R1 and once the R4 came into use many of these had the buckle strap double over to make it thinner. Eventually these were made for the R4 with a thinner buckle strap to fit through the narrower sling buckles of the R4.

The one pic below shows the R1 sling (at the top) and the other the difference between the R4 and R1 sling.

Here is a R4 sling, with P70 webbing clips fitted, thus making it easier to fit and remove compared to the R1 sling.

What is interesting is this R1 sling you can see where the wider R1 strap was cut off and a thinner R4 strap added.

Here is the early R1 sling (similar to WW2 british lee enfield sling) fitted to a R1 rifle.

Here is the P70 type R1 sling fitted, with earlier sling alongside for comparison.
