Early pattern browns
Re: Early pattern browns
Finally completed my 70's browns, after find a set of pants to fit, just shorting the early embroided bush bush pips.

This book printed 77 has plenty pics of the 70's browns

Re: Early pattern browns
The material sometimes has a more olive colour than later style browns and the pants were not as hardy and wore through easier than later browns

Re: Early pattern browns
A pattern 1 bush jacket. Note the top slanted pockets and bottom pocket design. These were based upon the US supplied item of the time. Some of these P1 bush jackets were also a greener coloured material seen in other P1 items.
Note the keeping the name tag horizontal

Re: Early pattern browns
Very interesting information. Where does the bush jacket with the straight pocket, but exposed buttons fit then? Is it a variation of second pattern bush jacket? An intermediate between first and second?

Quoting Mike Du Toit, comments on FB dated 10/4/2022,very informative info.
SADF " browns" were designed and developed by the military defense arm of CSIR[Council for scientific and industrial research] in early 1970 under the leadership of Colonel Nel. [A part time Colonel with the Commandos. i.e. Home defense.] This include pattern 70 webbing. SABS South African Bureau of Standards designed the uniform fabric together with Da Gama textile mills. The basic uniform design came from the UK 1960 field dress uniform. The small design feature's that one sees in production browns over the years, was asked for by factories that either did not have the necessary machinery or skills to conform the the original design. I.e. shirt spade pocket flaps to square flaps. Other design features came for field experience like button belt loops to sewn down loops and hip flap pockets to welt concealed hip pocket etc.
Other odd design features of SADF browns is none of the jackets or shirts had top neck buttons. The theory was it more hot than cold in SA and there was always the scarf to wrap around the neck when cold. The other odd thing was that the shirt had a button up front while the pockets had hidden buttons. This was a direct result of some troopie complaining, during field trials, that the webbing yoke straps going to the belt snagged the pocket exposed buttons.
