CB Drill

Post by richardtl »

CB – Confined to barracks.
Opfok – literal meaning ‘f@ck-up’ – term given to punishment exercise
Oppie – abbreviation of a ‘Opfok’ – term for punishment exercise

I got 5 hours of cb drill for my awol in 87 ( Oudtshoorn ).

One piece of kit all the veterans here will recognise - it will send instant shivers down anyone’s back. The infamous “Rooi Dooibie”.
This headgear was issued to anyone whose behaviour or actions where deemed undisciplined in the old SADF and they where “Confined to Barracks” (CB) or given “CB Drills”. It’s sort of like a prison sentence, only a little worse, as the person wearing it received “corrective physical training”, known as a “oppie” (Op F*k) as a form of physical punishment on an endless cycle - morning to night until the end of the specified punishment period.
For anyone receiving this item of kit and on “CB Drills”, then this Afrikaans term seemed apt ... “dit was nag”.
It can also be said that this system was at times abused by over zealous PTI corporals and quite a number of people where traumatised by it, whilst others took it in their stride as just part of their overall army experience and wore the helmet as a “badge” of independence.

Some units used a full staaldak or some the inner Dooibie only......

"Yeah right the red cherry targeted by every PF prowlers . I wore that sin tin for two weeks for not lacing my inspection boots parallel . I remember having to mark time while taking a dump and having to carry the dreaded '' Toothpick" (half metre sawn off log) with me 24/7 . Good old 5 SAI days AVANTE !"

"If I remember correctly It was Duncan Faure of the rock band RABBIT that was in the DB in Tempe in '78..also wearing a Rooi Doiby.."

"I actually saw a guy get it, I will never forget he had to make his bed all over the camp, he had to carry it, make it, with trommel as well and stand a full inspection, he then has 15 minutes to get it all to the other side of the camp and re do it again, I got back from pass in the evening and when I woke up the next morning it was still going on."

"Lol I served 87-89 in tdk and then 44 parachute brigade. I had the red staldak for 25 days cb drill once😂afkak time. The border was scary but the home based training was harder and scary "

"Theres another piece of kit that went hand in hand with the red doibie.was calle red marble a kakswaar block of concrete .I remember these well."
